The Fifth Road

Benevolence

“Be soft. Don’t let the world make you hard. Don’t let pain make you hate. Don’t let bitterness steal your sweetness.”

This road is seldom walked upon by many, even though it is the widest and has the power to take us to the most beautiful of places. Perhaps people find it boring and instead would rather opt for the more vibrant trails, or maybe because the irrational weather scares them off, but it is often the most difficult journeys that are the ones worth taking. I found you on the side of the road alone even though the strong winds tried to take you off course. Despite the violent gusts, you never let go, and that’s when I knew that I wanted to hold your hand, even if it meant we would fly away together.

While we’ve walked together on so many other paths, it was here that I truly fell for you, because at my core, I am most impressed by kindness. “Kindness, I think, comes from learning hard lessons well, from falling and picking yourself up. It comes from surviving failure and loss. It implies an understanding of the human condition, forgives its many flaws and quirks. When I see that in someone, it fills me with admiration.” Because in the end, I don’t need beauty, wealth, fame, or intelligence. Kindness is the most rare, and kindness is the most precious trait in any human being.

Your heart is kind, warm, and large. Your soul is bright, pure, and gentle. You are the most loving, strongest, most caring person I’ve ever met. You care about sustainablity, supporting local businesses, and changed your entire lifestyle to stand against animal cruelty. You forgive those who hurt you, believe in second chances, and see the good in people even when there may not be anything there. You simply care for others deeply, sometimes more than they deserve, and despite all that you’ve been through, you refuse to allow life to rob you of your kindness. If our eyes could only see hearts in place of faces, you’d still be the most beautiful person in the world to me.

I hope that we can always walk this road together no matter how long and winded it may be. The world can be a dark place, so I’m grateful that you are a part of the light. Thank you for being so strong and always smiling through your pain. Thank you for always seeing the best in others—especially in me—even when I sometimes can’t see it in myself.
